May 14, 2016 - The "Solar Lunchbox" Project"
At our December 2015 meeting, NTREG Treasurer Mike Renner gave a presentation about a "Solar Cart" he designed and built to solve a need that became increasingly apparent. Each year, NTREG participates in a variety of activities and events, and we needed a portable solar electricity demonstration system to use in our event booths, in classrooms, and other locations. The "Solar Cart" was the solution. The Solar Cart is a complete "off-grid" solar electric system that shows how solar energy works and provides solar electricity at our booths for our various displays, yet is small enough and lightweight enough to fit into the trunk of a car.
At the December meeting, NTREG member Jon Fripp and his daughter Isabel watched with great interest. Isabel wanted a portable solar power source, but not as large as the Solar Cart. So .. she and her father designed and built the "Solar Lunchbox" - a miniature version of the Solar Cart. They brought their "Solar Lunchbox" to our January, 2016 meeting. It was an immediate hit! Interest among our members and attendees was so great, our Program Coordinators took notice, and decided to schedule a meeting where NTREG members could build a Solar Lunchbox of their own.
Our May, 2016 meeting was the day selected for the projects. Though not apparent from the photos, 52 attendees - builders and observers alike - were present for the "Solar Lunchbox" meeting.
How did everything turn out? The photos say it all...

NTREG members and visitors to our May 14 meeting signed in at the reception table illuminated by an LED lamp powered by a "Solar Lunchbox".
The meeting started out the same as other meeting, with one exception - 17 Solar Lunchboxes sitting on tables, ready to be built.
17 builders and 35 observers participated at our May 14 meeting. After a brief "how-to" presentation, it was time to get started building!
Isabel assists one of the builders. She's very enthusiastic about teaching, just like her father.
Builders of all ages participated. Here, young Jack is connects wiring, while his mother Nicole looks on .. supervising, and learning.
Enthusiastic builders and observers. The most common question asked wasn't related to building, it was "When are we going to do this again?"
The results ... All 17 "Solar Lunchbox" projects completed. They worked perfectly! 100% success!
