2011 National Solar Home Tour - DFW Edition.

The American Solar Energy Society National Solar Home Tour is an annual event where homeowners of energy efficient and solar homes hold an "open house" and invite members of the public to come see and ask questions about their equipment.

Chris Roseberry holds a Solar Home Tour sign, and displays not only his home, but energy efficient devices as well.

Rich Rock shows off his battery-powered GE lawnmower. (It's almost as old as Rich!)
2011100103.png
Nissan Leaf all-electric automobiles were also part of the Solar Home Tour. If it's energy-efficient, it's out for public display!
2011100104.png
Another Nissan Leaf. Excess solar energy produced during the day often charge electric vehicles for little or no cost, depending on the size of the solar array.

While Paul Westbrook was answering questions for visitors in the back yard...

.. others were out front greeting newcomers. NTREG members Lissa (NTREG Program Co-Chair, in white), and Terri (turquoise) made guests feel welcome at Paul's home.
2011100108.png
You'd never know by looking that the Westbrook home is one of the most energy efficient in the Metroplex! Looks like almost any other home in the area!
2011100109.png
Bill Neukranz' home had one of the larger solar electric systems on display for the 2011 Solar Home Tour.
2011100110.png
Jim Duncan's solar electric system. "Trackers" automatically follow the sun for increased energy production.
2011100111.png
Jim Duncan sent us this photo to remind us it can also get very cold in Texas. Homes need to be built to be energy efficient in summer AND winter!
2011100112.png
The Hawa residence. One need not have a large amount of solar equipment for it to be effective. This modest solar hot water system provides most of the hot water needed by their family.
2011100114.png
Chris Hendrix' home has it all: solar electricity, solar hot water, and a wind turbine. Here, a 1,000 watt solar array is mounted on a pole near his house.
2011100113.png
The Hendrix home also has battery backup power. This is a more extensive system than most people elect to install.
2011100115.png
Rear of the Hendrix home showing another 3,000 watts of solar electricity on the roof.
2011100116.png
Chris Hendrix also installed a medium-sized wind turbine to capture some of the Texas country wind.
2011100117.png
The O'Keefe residence. These are "black-on-black" solar panels that are often selected because they blend into the roofline better in some cases.
2011100118.png
Sunny side of the Rich Rock residence with the solar electric system. Rich is one of the longer-term solar energy supporters in the Metroplex.
2011100119.png
The Ed Soph home sports a nicely installed solar electric system that blends perfectly with the roof line.
2011100120.png
The "Zero Energy Casita" built by Don Ferrier Builders was on the 2011 Tour. The solar electric equipment produces as much energy as the residents consume.
2011100121.png
The exterior walls of the Casita were constructed using recycled and refurbished wood from an old barn. The wood is more sound than particle-board walls used in new construction. Buyers wanted a "rustic" appearance.
2011100122.png
The Casita is a small but very functional home. This is a view of the kitchen area - well illuminated by natural light, with a very open feel.
