North Texas Renewable Energy Group - Event Photo Journal
2010 Oak Cliff Earth Day.
Earth Day in Oak Cliff on April 18, 2010 was cold, windy and rainy. Not a "Texas" rain. More of a drizzly "Seattle" rain, where it would rain for a few minutes, stop for a while, then rain for a few more minutes. Still, several thousand people braved the weather to attend. Small events are good too. It allows more time to talk with visitors. It also means WE get a chance to walk around and visit with other exhibitors. Such was the case at the 2010 Oak Cliff Earth Day. (Some of the images are a bit dark due to the heavy overcast this day.)

First thing to come into view was this banner. It was attached to the front of a rather large and .. well .. differently-colored bus. What in the world is a "Fryer Flyer"???.
This is a "Fryer Flyer".
It looks like a school bus .. but .. green??
It IS a school bus! A bright GREEN school bus!
Dallas Independent School District modified some of their bus fleet to use waste vegetable oil from the school cafeterias. Students + french fries = fuel!
Recycled french-fry oil wasn't the only attraction. A Toyota Prius hybrid car was on display...
.. as was this Toyota hybrid RV.
Exhibitor tents are spread out all over Lake Park. It's an absolutely beautiful setting for an environmental event.
Tents came in handy this day. The brave few with open displays learned how to cover things quickly.
"Restaurant Row". Food vendors were located together. Each one offered a variety of food, flavors, and fun!
Chefs from adjoining booths swap stories (and recipies?). Nah.
A shy chef? Believe it or not .. yes!
The Spiral Diner & Bakery is a regular exhibitor at many environmental events. They offer organic food and a totally vegan menu.
Solar robots. Solar music. Even a "Global 'worming' Generator" (a small compost bin).
Electric scooters. The sign says some models go 100 miles on a charge. Larger models go 60 mph and up to 50 miles per charge. Charge time is 3-4 hours.
"Let's see. If I juggle the beach balls while working all three Hula-hoops, I win!?!"
Many people have trouble working a Hula-hoop by itself. This young lady suceeded while wearing a raincoat!
Dallas Mayor Pro Tem Elba Garcia reads an Earth Day proclamation.
Dan's "Solar Shuttle" (background) provided all the electricity for the sound stage.
Earth Day organizers and local business leaders joined Dallas Mayor Pro Tem Elba Garcia on stage.
Just had to get a photo of the lady with the sunflower hat and her dog.
A local church group provided excellent musical entertainment.
When it rained, the entertainment and dancing went indoors, and the Earth Day celebration continued.
The site selected for the Solar Shuttle by event organizers was shady. Fortunately, fully-charged batteries in the Shuttle provided all the stored solar energy needed for the entire day.
Looks like skid marks, and the Shuttle is about to slide into the the lake. It's actually mud tracks from the tow vehicle. This proved to be one of the most "interesting" locations ever parked.
